The White Stripes - Main Street Rhythm and Blues Bar, Hamilton, NZ - 1/11/00

The White Stripes are the brother and sister duo of Jack and Meg White, they are from Detroit and were playing the first date of their New Zealand tour in Hamilton.
The first thing that struck me about The White Stripes was how clear and strong their sound came across. Instead of the usual wall-of-sound approach, their songs (which were a mish-mash of garage punk, blues and pop) had plenty of space, making it possible to actually hear the vocals 95% of the time.
Meg White’s drumming was nicely understated; some songs involved mainly kick-drum, snare and floor tom action, so when she hit the cymbals you really noticed it.
Jack White would bound from one vocal mic to the other (and even sang into one of the drum mics on their closing song ‘Screwdriver’) and alternated between a stylish red & white electric guitar of unknown origin and an electric acoustic, covered in what looked like brown paper.
‘Hello Operator’ and ‘You’re Pretty Good Looking’ were standout songs, and when they played a creepy rendition (that’s a compliment) of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ without a trace of irony, there was no denying that The White Stripes were indeed the real deal.
