The Smugglers, The Datsuns - Ward Lane, Hamilton, NZ, 25/5/00
Hamilton's The Datsuns have been playing quite a bit around the place lately and are making quite a name for themselves. Tonight they seem more fired up than usual and with the constraint of a shorter time slot, they play one of the better sets I've seen them play - was great to see tonight's headliners The Smugglers up front taking in the local support - not often you see that...
After the changeover (during which, DJ
Skinny spun some fine tunes) Canadians The Smugglers hit the stage (resplendent in
some tasteful gumboots) and treat us to some damn fine punk/rock'n'roll.
I'm not all that familiar with The Smugglers material, but I recognised 'Cans Of Love',
'Booze Can' and 'Rosie', on which guitarist David takes over the second vocal parts
(sung by Rose Melburg from Go Sailor on the album) and does an admirable job of it to
boot.
A local lad won the dance contest and received a Curling trophy for his efforts and
another local guy won the general knowledge quiz, ( I never knew Rush were from Canada?)
the prize being a kiss from drummer Graham.
The local crowd loved The Smugglers ( who were having trouble staying on their feet, due
to the stage which was bouncing around so much that it threatened to fall apart at any
moment) and during the encore, singer Grant Smuggler was pulled from the stage and passed
around on peoples hands - not so unusual you might think, except for the fact that Ward
Lane has a very low ceiling, which meant that Grant was pinned face first to the ceiling
and pillars several times!
A great show - hopefully more Lookout! bands will make the trip to the 'arse end
of the world'!
