The Clean -  Ward Lane, Hamilton, New Zealand - 7/10/00

Seminal Flying Nun band The Clean attracted a large crowd to their show at Ward Lane, which, I might add, started extremely early.
I've always loved The Clean but have never seen them play live before, so when I arrived at around 10pm to be greeted by the sound of David Kilgour's fractured guitar, Hamish Kilgour's 'train-track' drumming and Robert Scott's looping bass-lines eminating from the PA, my heart leapt.
The crowd was a little stand-offish at first, forming a semi-circle in front of the stage for 'Point That Thing Somewhere Else' and the following two numbers, but within the first few bars of 'Fish' the floor was packed.
'At the Bottom', 'Drawing to a (W)hole', 'Getting Older', 'Tally Ho' and a whole lot of new songs followed before they said good night and attempted to leave the stage - impossible due to the rabid throng which was blocking their path, so they encored with 'Sweet Jane' and 'Candy Says', the grins on everyones' faces evidence that we were all witnessing something special.
