The Subliminals, Trucker, The Dead Pan Rangers - Diggers Back Bar, Hamilton, NZ, 10/9/99
Hamilton's Dead Pan Rangers are first up, and are just as great as they were the first time I saw them. Any band with a song called 'If It Weren't For You Meddling Kids' reeks of class in my opinion. 'Catch On Rye' and 'Jimmy Jazz Gets His' are the standouts for me, as well as 'Yellow Finger' which has a Steve Albini style vocal. These guys should be famous.
Trucker come on next and do their pop/rock thing - lots of loud guitars, solid rhythym section and catchy tunes such as 'High Ace', 'Up Your Tempo' and new one 'You Ruin Everything' equate to a good time all round,
From Auckland, The Subliminals are in Hamilton to promote their new EP 'The Crystal Chain'. They are a band that manage to sidestep any sort of classification, with some songs being fairly complex, others being straight-ahead pop songs and some resembling a mixture of the two. If you can imagine a hybrid of Dimmer, Fugazi and Superchunk you're probably still not even close.
