Doctor Explosion, Hollow Grinders, The Datsuns - Ward Lane, Hamilton, NZ - 26/6/00
The Hollow Grinders made a welcome return to the
live scene in Hamilton after a long absence, playing old favorites like 'Rhythm
and Swing' as well as a few newer ones which were a bit more laid back but still
have that distinctive Hollow Grinders surf twang.
Unfortunately their set was hampered by broken guitar strings, but when it all
came together they were definitely on form.
The Datsuns have been playing quite a bit lately and it's meant that they can cut loose a bit more which they do tonight - not the greatest I've seen them play but still plenty of fun none the less.
I must confess my knowledge of Doctor Explosion was limited before this, so I don't know any of the song titles (one I caught was 'Not So Cool') but I can say that their songs were fantastic! - Punk/Pop/Rock'n'Roll (similar to that of the Smugglers who toured recently) played with heaps of energy and passion and sung in both English and Spanish. The night ended up with Singer/Guitarist Jorge leading the crowd in a 30 strong conga line out into the foggy streets of Hamilton, around the venue and then back inside for one last song. Why bands like this are wallowing in obscurity I'll never know...
