Dead Moon, The D4, Trucker - Xtatic, Hamilton, NZ, 19/5/99

Arrive in time to catch the last 2 songs of Trucker's set ('Up Your Tempo' and 'Vatican'), sounded good, but slightly too loud...

Up next were the D4 from Auckland, who played some pretty sharp rock'n'roll songs about cars, girls and going out on a Saturday night. Full marks to their drummer (who is also a member of Shaft I'm told) who managed to not miss a beat, despite suffering from sliding-kick-drum-syndrome.

From Portland, USA, Dead Moon sell out shows all around the world, tonight in Hamilton they have drawn a good size crowd for a Wednesday night. I last saw Dead Moon in Gisborne in 1992, where they pulled off a jaw droppingly good set , 7 years later they are still doing it just as well (if not better).

Tonight we get not one, but two sets of full-on garage punk rock, indespersed with quieter moments (their rendition of the Rolling Stones 'Play With Fire' for instance).Andrew Lomis is one of the most dynamic drummers you'll ever see, living proof that  tricky fills and flashy gear aren't really necessary, and the song '54/40 Or Fight' is one of the best punk rock songs you won't hear on a surfing video or some crappy "youth culture" compilation. It's hard to put a Dead Moon gig into words - all I can say is, if you get the chance be sure to go and see them.
